Etymology[ edit ] The most ancient recorded name for Bristol is the archaic Welsh Caer Odor the fort on the chasm , which is consistent with modern understanding that early Bristol developed between the River Frome and Avon Gorge. Shaw derived the name from the Celtic words bras quick, rapid , or braos a gap, chasm, and tuile a stream.
The poet Thomas Chatterton popularised a derivation from Brictricstow linking the town to Brictric , the last king of Wessex. It appears that the form Bricstow prevailed until , and the Bristolian ‘L’ the tendency for the local dialect to add the sound “L” to many words ending in a neutral vowel is what eventually changed the name to Bristol.
History of Bristol and Timeline of Bristol Robert Ricart’s map of Bristol, drawn when he became common clerk of the town in At the centre, it shows the High Cross. The Bristol merchants subsequently played a prominent role in funding Richard Strongbow de Clare and the Norman invasion of Ireland. There was also an important Jewish community in Bristol from the late 12th century through to the late 13th century when all Jews were expelled from England. During the 16th century, Bristol merchants concentrated on developing trade with Spain and its American colonies.
Augustine founded by Robert Fitzharding four hundred years earlier became Bristol Cathedral. Bristol also gained city status that year. Bristol’s location on the west side of Great Britain gave its ships an advantage in sailing to and from the New World, and the city’s merchants made the most of it. The 18th century saw an expansion of England’s role in the Atlantic trade in Africans taken for slavery to the Americas. Bristol and Liverpool became centres of the Triangular Trade.

Day 79 of our big trip – 13 July Hi. Made a spelling mistake a couple of days ago, should have said the transport was tuk tuk, pronounced took took. Had to get up early again because we were going to do the long days tour of the Angkor Archealogical Park today. The first temple that we called on was the Bayon. We learnt that when the king was in power, Cambodia as we know it was the biggest settlement in the world. This was approximately in so it is all fairly old.
Consequently there were changes at the temples. After that temple we went to the Preah Khan. We bought some souveniors from the roadside people, a couple of printings of the carving in the stone of the temples and some fabric. We did not buy anything from school children. We did intend to go to the East Mebong temple but were put off by the height of the steps.
So we just took a couple of photos from the tuk tuk. Then we carried on and had lunch at a local restaurant, serving local food such as fish amok.
It was a really strange feeling with so little changed in 50 years. We were invited inside and met some disabled children, so I felt that my Dad would have been pleased that the house was still being used to care for children. With dating, or in a non-commital relationship, you spend so much time and money on keeping the relationship afloat. And I hate the “Lets get to know you” process, where you have to do the University last minute cram for the exam.

Thursday, January 24, I Know It’s Over Late last year, on a chilly mid-week evening at an exhibition viewing in Shoreditch, I confided to a friend that after three years, four flats and what I sometimes nauseatingly thought to myself could be hundreds of thousands of pounds, I was finally calling London quits. Her response surprised me.
Of course, the summer, apparently the wettest in years, had not helped – it seemed no sooner had we escaped the elusive ‘jet stream’ and its associated daily violent downpours than we were back in finger-burning subzero temperatures, with barely a handful of those glorious summer days in the park to carry us through the inevitably long winter that approached. Even taxi drivers I had heard, from people who actually had enough money to catch taxis had noticed that the entire city was in a funk – hardly surprising after waking up to an endless grey sky every day since May.
But it wasn’t just the weather. Then there were the ever-increasing transport fares, the ever-decreasing salary expectations and the relentless spread of gentrification making everything even less affordable than before. When I’d first moved to London, I had a twenty minute commute to work, if I could time the buses right. Now, I was paying more or less the same amount of rent for a flat forty-five minutes out of town, and the presence of a newly erected batch of ‘luxury’ apartments across the road told me I wouldn’t be able to afford that much longer either.
Of course, it wasn’t as easy as simply letting it all go in one fell swoop. It was strange how much London now felt equally as much my home as Sydney, as if I had two divorced parents who lived on different continents – when I was with one, I missed the other, and vice versa, and as much as I longed for the warmth in my bones and the comfortable lifestyle that the city of my birth could give, I wondered whether I could truly be a complete person back home again once I left London behind.
Lodigo on November 17, NickR, I’m shooting for 6. Are you going to be there? Lotus on November 17, I was seeing this guy who was on paper perfect. Ticks in all the boxes – sexy, interesting, good manners, blah blah, but the first time we had sex he wanted to go in the back door.

Now the trio are hitting the road again, travelling north from Melbourne to Byron Bay to attend the wedding of Meredith’s daughter. Nina, the overweight wife of a footy legend and mother of three sons, is desperate for some female bonding – if only she could stop acting like a mother hen. Divorced homewares shop owner Meredith is wondering if her perfectly elegant life is perhaps a bit empty; while single real estate agent Annie has been drowning her sorrows in drink.
With a catty choirmate, hairy union officials and feral pigs to contend with, their unforgettable roadtrip makes for one feel-good read. Then a chance meeting with Scottie Taylor leads to the pop star proposing to her in front of a sell-out crowd at Wembley Stadium. Soon Fern is living the celebrity dream in LA, with a wedding planner on hand.
